Play It As It Lays: A Novel Joan Didion
Publisher: Farrar, Straus and Giroux

Again, the word doesn't seem to fit the context. On the surface Joan Didion's Play It As It Lays looks like yet another story of a beautiful, privileged woman suffering a nervous breakdown. It's hard to really like anything about this book, in the traditional sense. Didion's book seems a kind of offspring of these other two books. No likeable characters in the whole story which describes the downhill slide of an actress into a mental institution. Those girls, too, sat under bell jars of a sort.' Plath lays bare the connections between society's norms and oppressions and her protagonist's journey through suicidal depression. The stories by carrie fisher are much more interesting with characters that are redeemable. Esther compares her own incarceration in a mental health clinic to the restrictions on young women like her in the outside world: 'What was there about us, in Belsize [hospital], so different from the girls playing bridge and gossiping and studying in the college to which I would return? As I was reading this book, I was reminded of The Day of the Locust by Nathanael West and Good Morning, Midnight by Jean Rhys. As I am not familiar with Didion's other novels – or the literary set she belongs to – I can only go by my own knowledge. Everything's even laid out like the novel, as the main screen lays out “events” that unlock in order as the player progresses and they can be revisited at any time after being unlocked, much like the chapters in a book. Play it As it Lays (1970), is one of many, many books I've received from Paperback Swap in the past three years, though I only got around to it recently, which is pretty much the story of my life in reading. Play It As It Lays is a psychological portrait of a woman who has abandoned her heart.
